Pumpkin pie spice mix is a blend of traditional dessert spices that include (of course) cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves and allspice. Pumpkin itself is a member of the squash family, a North American native that is harvested in the early-to-mid fall. There is possibly no better example of a truly "creole" dish than pumpkin pie; spice mix ingredients come primarily from the southwest Pacific islands that make up the nation of Indonesia. Cinnamon, the most plentiful and popular component of pumpkin pie spice mix, is derived from the bark of a species of laurel that is grown primarily in Sumatra and Java; smaller amounts come from China, Sri Lanka and the island of Madacascar. Nutmeg also grows in Indonesia, but is actually the ground seed of a tropical evergreen, as do cloves. Interestingly, allspice (native to the Caribbean) was so named because its flavor combined all three of these flavors.
